Ottawa's Fuel Tax Holiday: What the Gas and Diesel Excise Break Means for Your Budget

The federal fuel excise tax is suspended from April 20 to September 7, 2026. Here's how to fold the savings, and a few other Bill C-30 measures, into your projections.

TaxesGovernment & Budget

On June 19, 2026, Bill C-30 received Royal Assent, implementing measures from the Spring Economic Update. For most households the most visible change shows up every time you fill the tank: the federal excise tax on gasoline and diesel is temporarily suspended.

What changed at the pump

  • The federal fuel excise tax is suspended from April 20 to September 7, 2026, trimming about 10 cents per litre off gasoline and 4 cents per litre off diesel.
  • The excise tax on aviation fuel is also suspended for the same window, which can filter through to airfares.
  • It is a holiday, not a permanent cut. The tax is scheduled to return after September 7, 2026.

What it means for your budget

The savings are modest per litre but add up for anyone who drives regularly. At 10 cents per litre, a household filling roughly 200 litres a month saves about $20 a month, or close to $100 across the five-month window. If you commute long distances or run a vehicle for work, the effect is larger. The key planning point is that it is temporary: your fuel line should step back up in September, so don't bake the lower cost into your permanent monthly budget.

Other Bill C-30 measures worth modeling

  • Home Buyers' Plan: the RRSP repayment grace period is extended from two to five years for withdrawals made between 2026 and 2028, easing early-ownership cash flow.
  • Labour Mobility Deduction: the minimum distance threshold drops from 150 km to 120 km and the maximum deduction rises from $4,000 to $10,000 a year for tradespeople who travel for work.
  • CPP contributions: the base contribution rate falls from 9.9% to 9.5% starting in 2027, saving about $133 a year for someone earning $70,000, which slightly raises take-home pay.

Model it in AffordaFlow

In AffordaFlow you can capture the fuel holiday as a temporary reduction to your transportation expense that reverses in September, so your projection reflects the bounce-back rather than assuming permanently cheaper gas. If you are planning a first home purchase, adjust your RRSP repayment schedule to the new five-year grace period, and if you expect to contribute to CPP in 2027, nudge your projected take-home pay upward to see how the rate change flows into savings.
